A poet has said, "Nothing chills the heart of man, like passing through death's gate."
It's true. What causes more pain and fear than death?
All of us, regardless of race, religion, economic status, heritage -- must face death personally.
Every passing day is one day closer to that terrifying moment; when we breathe our last. Every beat of our heart uses up one of the few moments on earth we are given.
All the pleasures we worked for, all the possessions we acquired, all the power we gained; none of it matters in that final hour. Thoughts like these scare us, don't they? Even to the point of ignoring the subject of death altogether? Even reading these words tempts us to look away and focus on other things -- things that aren't quite so...real.
Yet death won't ignore us.
In this dark subject there is a ray of light -- a beacon of hope for those who want to escape the tragedy and fear of death. The Bible speaks of "Christ Jesus, our Savior [who] broke the power of death and illuminated the way to life and immortality..." (2 Timothy 1:10)
If there is even one chance in a million that this statement is true -- that Jesus Christ has broken the power of death -- it would certainly be reasonable for us to check into His claims. If there is a way to gain assurance about our eternal destiny, or to have an everlasting relationship with our Creator -- why wouldn't we take the time to learn a little more?
A few readings from the Bible that I'd recommend: The Gospel of John (the story of Jesus told by one of His disciples), and the book of Ephesians (a letter written by the Apostle Paul to show what Christianity is all about).
