Is All Truth Created Equal?

In the early years of World War II, reports started to trickle out of Germany of the inhumane brutality being exercised against the Jews and anyone who dared challenge the Nazi regime. Death camps, filled with unimaginable torture and evil, sprung up to systematically exterminate thousands--and eventually millions--of innocent people.

Behind this carnage was one man -- Adolph Hitler.

Here's the question: Were his actions right?

Of course, the vast majority of thinking people would shout a resounding "No!"

In our hearts we know that Hitler's policies were evil. But why do we know that? After all, Hitler thought he was right.  He thought he was "purifying" the world of groups of people who hadn't evolved to as high a level as himself (documentation of this is available through AIG).

Each of us has a built-in "referee" (conscience) that blows the whistle when we do or see wrong things. (That's why we feel "guilt" and why we demand "justice"). Deep within us, we have a "law" written on our hearts. We know how things "ought" to be. That's why we believe Hitler was wrong for killing millions, but that Mother Teresa was right for helping the poor.

unTruth cannot be equal with Truth

For those who always wondered why you needed math class, here's a reason: Math teaches us that there are absolutes. 5 + 5 = 10. That doesn't change. It doesn't matter what culture, or philosophy, or background you have. If I suggested that 5 + 5 = 11, I would be wrong. My truth claim would not be equal to yours.

When it comes to religious or philosophical truth, there are many different points of view, to be sure. There are many different answers to the same questions. So, how do we know which is right?

Two opposites cannot both be true. For example: "There is no God" and "There is a God" are exclusive statements. These two truth-claims are not equally valid: one is true and one is false.

Jesus Christ claimed: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but by Me." So, was he right or wrong? He made an exclusive, absolute claim. If any other religion is true, then this statement is totally false. If this statement is true, then every other religion is false.

You can't have it both ways.

Unlike beauty, truth is not in the eye of the beholder.
