Never Give In

Jonathan Edwards, a great preacher of early America, wrote in his Seventy Resolutions : "Resolved, never to give over, nor in the least to slacken my fight with my corruptions, however unsuccessful I may be." (#56)

When it comes to battling our corruptions (our sinful habits, desires, and appetites), it is easy to just give in, surrendering to what often feels like overwhelming temptation and inevitable failure. We throw our hands up, and with a sigh of resignation, admit: "I'll never win this battle--I quit! I'll just go ahead and sin!"

In these moments we must remember the promise of God: "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful. He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it." (1 Cor. 10:13)

Jesus died to free you from the bondage of sin, and as His follower you can experience victory over it! Confess your sin to God, repent, pick up your spiritual armor, resolve to follow your Lord, and above all, never give in!

Question : Have I been guilty of "giving in" to certain temptations?

Extra Thought: I wonder if sometimes we aren't waiting around for a "silver bullet" to finally rid us of our habits and sins. We want some special formula to painlessly remove vices and replace them with virtues. It won't happen. God's pathway to purity involves humility, effort, and the simple faith to say, "Lord, I refuse to give in to temptation!"

Saying "no" to sin is the key we've been waiting for!
