What is God Waiting For?

You hear it all the time. At least, you think it once in a while. "If God is really there, why does He let such evil things happen?" In a world of tsunamis, child abuse, murder, and greed, I must admit that I also wonder "why".

There is an answer, and its not some complex philosophical idea. It's simple.

The reason God lets evil things happen is because He is patient.

That's right, patient.

Looking at some of the tragedies that happen, we wonder why such patience is appropriate. What's God waiting for? Just stop the devil! Right!?

Well, God has promised to stop the devil. He has promised to end the influence of evil and bring in a new world of peace forever. But He waits. 2 Peter 3:9 explains: "The Lord isn't really being slow about his promise to return, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to perish, so he is giving more time for everyone to repent" (NLT). In other words, the reason God doesn't stop evil right now is because He is waiting for us -- you and I -- to come to Him.

Even in the face of evils and tragedies that break His heart daily, God is holding out for just a few more to trust Him, to turn from their sins, and to obey His Word. He's waiting because He loves us.

Of course, He won't wait forever. His kingdom will come.

The real question is: What are you waiting for?
