When I read Jesus' prophesy that many “Christs” would come in His name, I never thought I might receive a personal email from one of them. Apparently this "heavenly representative" found AbsoluteTruth.Net and decided to enlighten me with some “real truth” directly from what he called the “Office of the Messiah.”
I perused this man's material with interest . . . his repeated calls for humanity to live in peace, followed by chilling reminders that a failure to heed his warning would mean certain doom. At first, I thought this was just jab at faith in Christ; a satirical claim of Messiahship by an atheist seeking to prove a point.
But I was wrong.
“Terry” as we'll call him here, is a married man in his early 60's who really believes himself to commune with the Divine; sent directly from heaven to shine light on the darkness of the human world. His message for me? “Seek deep Daniel - all that deny me will soon be in hell.”
I decided to interact a little with Terry in an attempt to discover how a thinking person could ever arrive at such an absurd conclusion. Why did he believe himself to be the Messiah?
But that question stopped me. After all, Jesus claimed to be the Messiah. There are many who would assert that the claims of Jesus are on the same intellectual footing as the claims of Terry. What's the difference? Why would we laugh out loud at Terry's claims, yet willingly sacrifice our lives because of the claims of Jesus?
Paul, the great skeptic-turned-apostle, was not easily convinced that Jesus' claims had any merit. Yet just a few years after he "saw the light," we find him in the midst of Greek intellectuals, proclaiming that ". . . we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone -- an image made by man's design and skill. In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead." (Acts 17:29-31, emphasis added)
Paul knew that a claim to Godhood or Messiahship was not a matter to be left up to blind faith or conjecture. Such a supernatural claim would need supernatural proof.
God provided proof by raising Jesus Christ from the dead. In light of the resurrection, we can have confidence that Jesus Christ is the one (and only) Messiah, and that one day, even people like Terry will bow and confess Him as Lord of all.
