God couldn't let rebels go free without dealing with their sins. This would be a great breach of justice -- it wouldn't be right to "forgive" without someone paying the price for all the evil that has been done. Instead, God designed a plan that, though very costly to Himself, would provide a way of forgiveness for humans, while still upholding the principles of justice (See Romans 3 in the Bible). Jesus Christ was sent to pay the penalty for the sins of humanity. His sacrifice acted as a substitute for each of us -- so that if we will re-pledge our allegiance to God, the death of Jesus will satisfy the demand of justice for our crimes. Because of what Jesus accomplished when He died on the Cross, we can be forgiven by God. And, because Jesus rose from the dead, we can be assured that eternal life is possible. |
